Non-formal education

Non-formal education (NFE) represents a mode of learning that develops outside traditional school and academic contexts. Unlike formal education, which follows predetermined programs, grades, and official certifications, NFE is based on activities designed to stimulate skills, knowledge, and attitudes through more experiential and participatory methods. It is not random learning: on the contrary, it is structured, intentional, and designed to meet concrete educational needs, but in a different way from what we are used to.
NFE values learning through hands-on experience: collaborating in groups, challenging oneself in real situations, traveling, coming into contact with different cultures and environments, experimenting with practical activities that push people to step out of their comfort zone. In this sense, it not only enriches knowledge, but also fosters the development of fundamental transversal skills, such as the ability to communicate, work in a team, solve problems, manage conflicts, or take an active role in the community.
One area in which NFE finds particular recognition and application is that of European programs, primarily Erasmus+. Within these projects, non-formal education becomes the core of activities such as youth exchanges, training courses for sector professionals, international mobility, and active citizenship initiatives. Thanks to these experiences, thousands of young people across Europe have the opportunity to experience paths that combine personal growth, professional development, and social inclusion.
NFE, therefore, is not a lesser alternative to formal education, but a fundamental complement: it helps to shape people who are more aware, open, and ready to face a constantly changing world.
